Introducing…. Ruby’s our new Dalston Basement Bar!

We’re super excited to announce the opening of Ruby’s, our new Dalston basement bar. Set in the basement of Ruby House, underneath the cinema sign at 76 Stoke Newington Road the bar will focus on quality drinks in a decadent, intimate setting. We’ll be bringing something different to the area than the numerous party venues, namely somewhere to sit down and have a good old fashioned chat. Don’t be put off by the slightly seedy red-lighted entrance, that helps provide a nice contrast to the setting once inside!

The bar evokes a cosy intimate atmosphere and the music will be at a level where you don’t have to raise your voice to have conversation. Set in what was the kitchen of Ruby House 3, a former Chinese takeaway, the decor is a mixture of glazed brick, textured walls, wooden flooring plus a mish mash selection of tables, chairs and fittings. Luckily once stripping back we didn’t have to do too much though we did insert an original bar from a Mayfair pub and have updated the toilets (of course)! While we’ve been waiting for the licensing formalities to be completed the building has been busy as a photographic/filming location hosting shoots for the likes of Adele, Rihanna and the late Amy Winehouse.

We’ve had a special cocktail menu designed which compliments the character of the bar and each one is presented differently with the Blackberry Mojito’s being served in original 1940s Manchester milk bottles and the Passionfruit Bison Vodka Juleps coming in tin cups. We’ll be rotating our cocktail menu every month and each one will be carefully chosen for taste and presentation.

While we’re going to do a selection of cocktails really well we’ll not expressly be a cocktail bar. We’ve also cherry picked a quality selection of wine, premium spirits and beers so that for the casual drinker it will be a nice alternative to the traditional boozer. We’ve got loads of locally sourced refreshments from the likes of Redchurch Brewery and Sipsmith as well as a great selection from across the globe. Our hours mean we finish relatively early for the area (11pm on a weeknight and midnight on a weekend) so it will be a place to come for a good quality drink before heading off to dance the night away elsewhere.

In regards to bookings please note that we can only take bookings up until 8pm and for a maximum of 8 people.

Superette + Castle Gibson presents “The Roast Dinner”

We’re teaming up with Superette to host a secret pop-up Sunday lunch on 19th February. Mixing their dining expertise (they certainly know their roasts!) with our interiors “The Roast Dinner” will attempt to redefine the concept of the traditional “pop-up restaurant”.

With an appetising menu featuring pigs head terrine or gin cured salmon to start, “Essex Bird” or a shoulder of lamb to share plus the traditional offerings of pork belly, rib of beef and nut roast you get the feeling that those attending won’t be going home hungry! We’ll also be setting up a licensed bar to help wash it all down and creating a lounge area in our signature style to create what we hope will be the perfect Sunday lunch.

For more info and to apply visit the Superette website.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2012

To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on the 27th January we were pleased to donate The House Next Door for the filming of the promotional video made by the charity Speak Up, Speak Out. Featuring the likes of poet Benjamin Zephaniah, singer Beverly Knight and choristers The London Gay Men’s Chorus the viral explores the theme of communication and power of speech.

“Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future. On HMD we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.” hmd.org.uk

Support their cause and sign their pledge to acknowledge the past by challenging the language of hatred around us.

DIESEL PRESENTS ‘BRAVE NATIVES DIESEL ISLAND’ LAUNCH @ MC MOTORS

Earlier on in the year we hosted a product launch for denim giants Diesel at MC Motors. The event featured a live catwalk show with models sporting the brand’s autumn/winter collections. Check out these great images of the set up designed and produced by the team at Spice Lumb.

Luv Luv Luv Records Launch Party @ MC Motors

We recently played host to the official launch party of recently established independant label Luv Luv Luv Records at our MC Motors location featuring the live return of multi-platinum selling artist Florence & The Machine.

Set on an unusually sweltering September evening, the event featured perforances from a selection of the label’s newest signees including, the blues-tinged Jamie N Commons, London based art-rockers Theme Park, the boldly named Spector, and of course what was to be the main attraction of the evening, appearing in front of packed house, a fantastic full-band performance from Florence Welch and her well-oiled musical machine. Sporting a new hair-do, the South-London songstress showcased material from her up and coming album ‘Ceremonials’ along with belting out soon-to-be classics from her back catalogue, closing the event in spectacular fashion.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Empire Magazine recently released a ultimate movie celebration special to coincide with the release of the final instalment of the Harry Potter series. Tastefully shot by Sarah Dunn at both MC Motors and The House Next Door the series includes all the major players of the iconic films including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane and Timothy Spall.

(This one wasn’t taken at any of our locations but we couldn’t do a Harry Potter series without including Rupert Gint!)

Popstar to Operastar TV Advert

Here’s the new commercial for popular entertainment series “Popstar to Operastar” recently recorded at MC Motors. Featuring Katherine Jenkins, Rollando Villlazon and an airborne Myleene Klass the ad was skilfully curated by the ITV creative team.

Fortunately nobody was injured during its recording!

Jamie Woon – Mirrorwriting

Avant-garde musical alchemist Jamie Woon talks to 4Play about his new critically acclaimed “Mirrorwriting” album. With musical excerpts filmed at MC Motors the viral examines his thinking behind the album and how he pieced together the dubstep/soul collaboration so profusely.

“Woon’s debut has taken its time, but the beguiling results have been worth the wait.”

Land of Kings

This year MC Motors will be one of the venues hosting Dalston arts and entertainment festival Land Of Kings (play on Kingsland Road, geddit?).

Havana Club have taken over the warehouse giving it a Cuban style makeover with Giles and the guys at Soulshakers setting up a Havana themed bar. Rare films, secret story telling and domino boards are also strategically placed throughout the venue which has been curated by Vince Vella.

Festival goers will all have to travel through at some point to collect their wristbands and a stage has been set up to host Brass Roots and the Havana Club Collective amongst others. The #MEATEASY has left its temporary home in New Cross and is going back to its roots setting up its refurbished meatwagon in our car park. Our neighbours at Print Club are also getting involved bringing their screen printing expertise to the event.

Wristbands can be bought on the door and allow entry into a number of local institutions such as The Nest, The Alibi, The Arcola Theatre and Rio Cinema. The programme also incorporates The East End Film Festival and 2ManyDJs headline the extensive music programme which you can see in full here.

For full festival itinerary ticket info check out the Land of Kings website and get yourself in gear for a right royal knees up!
